What is the Pritikin First Step Program?
For the last two years, faculty at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa have been working on a new program – its working title is Pritikin First Step Program – that we are now continuing to test. The initial results have been very encouraging, with not only great improvements in cholesterol and blood pressure, but also an average weight loss of approximately 4 pounds per week.
Everything about Pritikin First Step is the same as the traditional program at the Pritikin Longevity Center except that Pritikin First Step’s food plan is less restrictive. Essentially, Pritikin First Step allows a little more sodium and a little more animal protein (seafood, poultry, and lean meat like bison).
We believe that Pritikin First Step will produce health benefits very similar to the traditional Pritikin Eating Plan. Its long-term results may even be better because, for many, it may be easier to follow in everyday life.
Fundamentally, Pritikin First Step, like all programs at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa, is all about getting you on the right track to good health for the rest of your life.
Nutritional Basics of Pritikin First Step:
- An emphasis on fresh, whole foods that are low in calorie density and high in fiber and nutrients, like fruits, vegetables, hot cereals, whole-wheat pasta, potatoes, brown rice, beans, and corn.
- Nine or more servings daily of fruits and vegetables.
- Whole grains rather than refined grains.
- Less than 2,300mg of sodium daily.
- Moderate servings of lean protein (about 6 to 8 ounces daily). Optimal sources are seafood, lean poultry, and lean meat like bison; nonfat dairy products; and plant sources like beans, nuts, and seeds.
- About 20% of total calories from fat.
